The WASPI generation of women were majorly impacted by changes to their state pension age

Pressure is mounting on the Government to make a decisive call on granting compensation to the WASPI generation, who were significantly affected when the state pension age for women was raised from 60 to 65, aligning with men's pension age. The Department for Work and Pensions is under fire for not adequately informing the women about the changes, disrupting many retirement plans.

A recent cross-party letter, signed by influential figures such as SNP leader Stephen Flynn, Lib Dem head Sir Ed Davey, and Green co-leader Carla Denyer, has been sent to the Government, pushing for a briefing on any action in response to the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman’s report before the Christmas recess, clarity on potential compensation schemes, and their commencement date.

The campaign for restitution for women affected by changes to the state pension age has received a significant boost from the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman, which issued a report in March backing compensation ranging from £1,000 to £2,950. The highest level of redress recommended is £10,000 or more, with several MPs supporting the push for payouts at this upper tier, reports The Express.

A bill had been laid before Parliament by ex-SNP MP Alan Brown proposing a compensation scheme, but progress stalled with the dissolution of the previous government.
