Pension campaigners say election promise would be a ‘vote winner’ with 3.6 million women
A report by the Parliamentary and Health Service Ombudsman into any failures at the Department of Work and Pensions over communication of the policy – which couldAngela Madden, chair of the Women Against State Pension Inequality campaign, said the group fears the prime minister and his Chancellor Jeremy Hunt will delay any decision about money until after the election.
“We want Labour to make a commitment in the manifesto,” said Ms Madden. “This is a clear injustice and compensation is long overdue. Waspi campaigners say women born during in the 50s were not properly informed that their state pension would increase from 60 to 65 to equalise with men. It was later increased to 66 for both sexes.
Asked by the SNP’s Patricia Gibson whether she thought affected women should get compensation, Ms Furniss said, “As a Waspi woman, you probably would be able to guess , wouldn’t you? That’s all I’m going to say at the moment.”
