Sean McMahon says he and his Walloper pal Andrew Hendy planned to go paddle boarding until a couple asked for their help

Two 'very lucky' young dolphins are safely back in the Irish Sea following the epic efforts of a band of good Samaritans including Sean McMahon and his Mary Wallopers pal Andrew Hendy.

"We took the boards with us thinking we might be able to use the boards to get them further out to sea - but the part where they were beached were quite a bit inland. They were in a state of distress when we got there and were breathing quite heavily and flapping their fins and tails. Sean added: "There was a couple of young fellas about 10 or 12 and they were running off and telling anyone with animals to keep their distance."

"We were talking away to the dolphins and gently rubbing them and you could feel them calming down the longer we were around them and the more water we could put on them." "They were able to gain a bit of strength before they could swim and then a couple of guys in wetsuits walked along with them guiding them out to the sea. Thankfully they swam out and seemed to be doing well. There was at least 15-20 altogether... It was a big community effort."

"They were juveniles... you could tell by the shape of their bodies that they were in good condition nutritionally. They just got into bother with the spring tides and all those long sand flaps. This kind of area could easily catch out the common dolphin.
