Another tweak in the law has cost the Treasury £450,000 over the past 11 years. When the percentage is applied to the Crown Estate profits the result is then rounded up to the nearest £100,000. In 2017/18 that meant an extra £75,000 windfall for the Queen. This year, King Charles gains from a rounding windfall of £50,000. Small change for them, but public money that could have been spent on their subjects.
Then in 2017 the percentage was raised from 15 to 25 per cent to fund a ten-year refurbishment of Buckingham Palace. My calculations indicate that extra 10 per cent has cost the Treasury a shade under £234m so far. Unlike his mother, Charles will not live in the Palace, using it only for official events. And if the public want to visit it they currently pay £90 each for small tours round a few of its 775 rooms. The £86.
