The historic Wellington Market in Shropshire is undergoing a major refurbishment to improve its layout, accessibility, and overall appeal while preserving its historic character.
Telford & Wrekin Council's Wellington Market , established in 1244, is undergoing a significant refurbishment project. The market, a bustling hub with over 50 shopping units, cafes, and a food court, has been awarded the contract to Pave Aways, a construction company based in Oswestry. The council emphasized its commitment to minimizing disruptions to traders, aiming for a 'business as usual' approach throughout the renovation.
The project aims to enhance the market's layout and accessibility while preserving its historical charm. This refurbishment is part of a broader regeneration plan for Wellington, spearheaded by the council and partially funded by £12 million from the government's Towns Fund and Capital Regeneration Programme. The council stated that preservation of the market's unique character is paramount to the project's success. Pave Aways, renowned for their work on other historic buildings in Shropshire, including the Shrewsbury Flaxmill Maltings, will collaborate with Group Ginger, an architecture firm based in Leeds, on this restoration endeavor. The Wellington Market revitalization project is expected to inject new life into this historic landmark, attracting visitors and boosting the local economy
