It is only the second reported case of MVE in Western Australia since 2018, but there have been eight cases nationally so far this year. Dr Paul Armstrong, the Department of Health's Director of Communicable Disease Control, said the case follows the MVE virus being found in mosquitoes and sentinel chickens — used to test for the presence of mosquito-borne disease — in parts of the Kimberley and Pilbara regions"We urge these communities to do everything they can to protect themselves against mosquito bites as there is no vaccination or specific treatment for Murray Valley encephalitis," Dr Armstrong said.
