Concerns have been raised that vehicles are being stored on escape routes making them inaccessible during a fire
New guidance on how to store mobility scooters in residential council properties could “open up a can of worms” according to a West Dunbartonshire Labour councillor.
Vehicles have been identified as a risk indoors if they are stored on escape routes meaning that if there was a fire, escape routes would become inaccessible due to smoke and heat and put residents at significant risk. The guidance therefore sets out where mobility scooters can and cannot be stored within residential properties.
The guidance aims not to remove scooters from disabled people but to prevent unsafe storage and charging which presents an evidenced fire risk. “We need to move on this and we need to move on it quickly. Our particular focus on class three vehicles which are large and people use them by choice, they are not medically prescribed. But concerns were raised about restricting the use of class three scooters.
