The couple Lynn were hit with bills that ran into thousands of pounds, after a mistake with their meter readings.

A West Lothian couple have described how Scottish Gas put them through ‘six months of hell’ after billing them incorrectly for thousands of pounds due to an error with their meter.

But in October 2023 they noticed their bill had rocketed. Normally, the couple had a very low energy use of around 9KW a day, a relatively small amount of usage that would generate a bill of roughly £846-a-year. They apologised to the couple for the stress caused but added that their details have since been updated, and although the error resulted in Mrs Dow receiving bills that were incorrect, she was not charged for the bills and did not pay towards them.

“We knew this wasn’t right and so we complained to Scottish Gas but they argued that the bill was correct. I exploded and phoned them several times but they kept telling me everything was correct. Thinking the issue was behind them, the couple decided to renew another year with Scottish Gas out of loyalty - but they were shocked to receive another inflated bill in January 2024.

“No one seemed to want to listen to us. To say I am furious is an understatement, I fear we will have to take them to court over this. Allan has recently suffered from a stroke and the last thing we need is the stress of this.”
