A new art installation in Winchester Cathedral transforms the nave into an underwater world, featuring three sperm whale sculptures and prompting reflection on the environmental impact on marine life.
A cathedral nave has been transformed to replicate life underwater in a new art installation. Designed by Oxfordshire-based artist Tessa Campbell Fraser, the exhibition aims to highlight the impact humans have on the environment. The month-long display will feature a range of public events, including silent discos, date night events, concerts, and immersive sound experiences.
The installation will showcase three sperm whale sculptures and encourage visitors to contemplate the environmental challenges facing marine life. It made its debut at the Messums West Gallery in Wiltshire, attracting over 20,000 visitors. The Very Reverend Catherine Ogle, Dean of Winchester, remarked that the whales would create a “richly evocative and unforgettable experience,” adding, “We will inevitably be led to reflect on our connection with creation and all God’s creatures and the call to live in harmony and justice. Whales are familiar yet mysterious and wonderfully ‘other.’The exhibition will run until February 26th and will include a folk concert by The Norfolk Broads, a talk by biologist and filmmaker Tom Mustill on animal communication, and a discussion with artist Tessa Campbell Fraser. The Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute at the University of Southampton is supporting the installation. Professor Damon Teagle, director of the institute, stated, 'Whales are the giants of our oceans that play extraordinary roles in shaping the world’s ecosystems and cultures, and even legal landscapes.'
