The new ITV1 series stars Sophie Turner and is based on the true story of Joan Hannington
Joan Hannington became known as one of Britain's most notorious jewel thieves. She swallowed diamonds and became known as 'The Godmother' in London's criminal underworld in the 1980s.
Game of Thrones' Sophie Turner plays Joan, who becomes a masterful jewel thief to create a better life for herself and her daughter. Sophie said she 'soaked up' the memoir and read it about '9 or 10 times' first.' “ the last piece of the puzzle was meeting Joan. And I mean, the minute Joan walks into a room, she is the star of that room," she Sophie said.
Joan turned to diamond theft for the thrill and to raise funds to rescue her daughter, Kelly, from foster care. She married an antiques expert and a member of the criminal elite Boisie . The couple amassed wealth and became one of Britain's most successful diamond thieves.
