Shadow home secretary James Cleverly appears to have stalled gaining no extra votes
Mel Stride was the latest candidate to be eliminated in the second round of MP voting in the Conservative Party leadership contesthave cemented their status as the frontrunners for the Conservative Party leadership after the second round of Tory MPs voting.
However, heading into the Tory Party conference in Birmingham later this week, Jenrick and Badenoch appear to be the candidates to beat. Meanwhile, Badenoch’s team claimed that the momentum was with them, pointing to the fact that she was “closing the gap” with Jenrick. On X, Badenoch said: “Thank you to every one of my colleagues who voted for me. I’m grateful to be in the top two and to have won the most new votes at this round. I’m also excited to take my campaign to conference.
On 9 and 10 October there will then be two more rounds of MP ballots, reducing the field to two finalists who will then take part in an online ballot of party members between 10 and 31 October, with the result to be announced on 2 November. With Stride viewed as a Tory moderate, Cleverly and Tugendhat will be optimistic that they can pick up his supporters. Tugendhat is a member of the centrist One Nation Conservatives caucus, which counts several MPs who previously publicly endorsedStride, while Cleverly already has some support from the One Nation group in the form of member Simon Hoare.
