One person jokingly said it was going to become a beach resort called 'Birkenhead Tropical'
The land sits between the local authority's new office buildings as part of the first phase of the Birkenhead Commercial District and the car park for the ASDA in Birkenhead town centre.
Plans for the whole Birkenhead Commercial District previously published by AHR Architects show plans for more offices on the current site of Birkenhead Market, a hotel on the Europa Square car park, and housing near Conway Park train station. The first phase of the development cost £75m and was forwarded funded by Canada Life Asset Management. AHR Architects put a total price tag on the project of £300m to be delivered over 15 years to "make Birkenhead town centre a destination in its own right."
The new offices in the Birkenhead Commercial District have been criticised by Green councillors for the £9m price tag attached to fitting out the buildings for council workers to move in. On top of this, the council is using £1.5m of reserves to cover rents following the end of construction and has spent £300,000 to insure the new buildings for three years.
