The appointment of Mickey Harte in Derry was arguably the most shocking managerial coup in GAA history.
But he went back on that when Galway came calling a couple of years later, citing his connection with the county as one of the reasons with his mother having hailed from Ballinasloe. It prompted midfielder Johnny Pilkington to fire back in the press and with the county board effectively backing the players, Keating resigned.
His former mentor, Mick O'Dwyer, also rounded out his final year in inter-county management with an unremarkable season in charge of Clare in 2013.Loughnane vowed after stepping down as Clare manager in 2000 that he would never manage at that level again but was tempted back by Galway six years later.
