Man Utd thought they had a bargain when they signed Donny van de Beek from Ajax but his three years at Old Trafford have turned into a nightmare.

It is two days before the end of the transfer window at the start of the 2021/22 season and Donny van de Beek's representatives have been told they can find him a club to join on loan.

What happened next sums up why a deal that had looked so promising when it was done in September 2020 has turned into a disappointment. With a season-long loan to Everton agreed, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer pulled the plug on deadline day despite not playing Van de Beek. Nobody was ever singing from the same hymn sheet when it came to getting the best out of the Dutch midfielder.

The irony, of course, is that it was Van de Beek who scored the final goal of the Solskjaer era. By now he was a cause celebre, glorified by the Stretford End as he warmed up during a 2-0 defeat to Manchester City and again at Watford, when his goal as a half-time substitute briefly threatened to get United back in the game, before the 4-1 loss hammered the final nail in the coffin for Solskjaer.

That looks like it is his final action for the club. He hasn't been on the bench for three successive Premier League fixtures and was left out of the 25-man squad for the Champions League group stages, with a move to Turkey before their transfer window closes on September 15 now a distinct possibility, although it could be a loan deal.

There is another reason why Van de Beek never quite made United home. Solskjaer never knew where to play him and the Netherlands international never knew where he had been signed to play. This was an opportunistic deal, a £35million signing when Real Madrid pulled the plug on a move as they grappled with the impact of Covid-19 on their finances.
