Our sister site the Liverpool Echo conducted a taste test of supermarket instant coffee - and one did not go down well
Loved by some, hated by others - coffee really is the marmite of the beverage world. The only problem is it can be on the expensive side. Our sister site, the Liverpool ECHO, conducted a taste test of supermarket instant coffee to see if any stood out on price and flavour. Each reviewer was asked to taste test three cups of supermarket coffee from Aldi, Asda and Lidl. The benchmark was Nescafe Gold Blend, which costs £5.99 for a 200g jar in Tesco.
Jess Molyneux added: "This was by far my favourite and if you wouldn't have told me, I wouldn't have guessed it was a supermarket brand - or even instant. With a strong taste and smell, I'd definitely recommend it and would even consider making the permanent switch to Aldi. I usually prefer my coffee more milky, but the flavour of this with only a dash of milk was just right.
"The main takeaway was that it opted for a smooth flavour, which could be a gateway for people who have never had a cup of Joe and are worried the caffeine hit could be too intense. Just know that it can get so much better than this." Lidl Bellarom Rich Roast Similar to Aldi, the team were unable to agree on the Lidl coffee. Ryan Paton thought the cup gave a "bitter kick," but Jess Molyneux thought it was "good value for money and I'd likely buy it again."
