The White House introduces a voluntary cybersecurity labeling program for smart devices to enhance consumer confidence and encourage companies to produce more secure products.
The White House introduced a voluntary cybersecurity labeling program for technology products. Consumers can use this program to ensure their smart devices aren't spying on them. Makers of wireless consumer Internet of Things (IoT) devices can submit their products for a security compliance review at an accredited laboratory. Products that meet the security criteria will be able to display the US Cyber Trust Mark and a QR code.
Device owners can use the QR code to access product information related to password resets, security, and updates. Vendors like Best Buy and Amazon have pledged to highlight products with the mark, encouraging participation in the program. The program focuses on IoT home security cameras, voice-activated shopping devices, smart appliances, fitness trackers, garage door openers, and baby monitors. It's not intended for medical devices, wired products, automotive products, industrial or enterprise products, or equipment under specific network security regulations. The White House aims to improve cybersecurity following high-profile attacks like those targeting Colonial Pipeline and SolarWinds. Amazon VP Steve Downer expressed support for the program, stating that Amazon looks forward to collaborating with industry partners and government officials to implement it. RJ Cross, director of US PIRG's Consumer Privacy Program, believes the program will incentivize companies to prioritize security and transparency.
