Nobody could accuse Princess Anne of having anything less than a rollicking love-life. From Captain Mark Phillips to the relationship with Andrew Parker Bowles.

From the shouts of joy which are rumoured to have emerged from the back of her horse-box when dating her first husband, Captain Mark Phillips, to the on-off, ding-dong relationship she had with Brigadier Andrew Parker Bowles , she's been kept pretty busy.

But, born the third child and only daughter of the king and his wife Queen Mary, she cut a romantic figure in her early years. Her 17-year old face was imprinted on the iconic brass tobacco tins sent to thousands of British troops at the front in 1914, and the princess became the soldiers' sweetheart.

In the manner of his predecessors, King George wanted his daughter Mary married off in a dynastic alliance with another European royal house, so that one day she'd be queen of a foreign country. But there were no takers. The couple had 'an illicit attraction' - they probably went further than unmarried couples of their class generally did – but the affair was over almost as soon as it began.

The King and Queen wanted Mary to marry Walter, the future Duke of Buccleuch. Walter was the heir to half a million acres, not one but FIVE stately homes, was stinking rich and descended from King Charles II But by now she was 24, and questions had been raised in Parliament about her marriage plans. It was beginning to look embarrassingly like the Princess Royal had been left on the shelf.

Harry was rich, but when he earlier proposed marriage to Vita Sackville-West , she recalled as she turned him down: 'He is tall, and not too ugly, but he has a silly laugh. He will be very rich. He always looks terrified.'Nonetheless, Princess Mary accepted his hand. 'News of the engagement provoked much ribald comment,' wrote Harry's cousin Alan 'Tommy' Lascelles. 'The Princess, though only 24, was reputed to be unmarriageable.
