They go together like a bat and a ball, salt and pepper, or a cappuccino and a croissant, if you will.But now Pret has been revealed as the high street coffee chain with the biggest price hikes in the past half decade, how many caffeine connoisseurs will cut ties with their once-favourite espresso spot?It was a hard break-up. Pret’s Cinnamon Danish is second to none. But I decided that enough was enough when they started charging £4.05 for a simple latte.
According to research conducted on behalf of industry data platform AltIndex, Pret’s prices have increased by an average of 57 per cent in the past five years, with its seven most popular drinks up by at least 90p. Pret chief executive Pano Christou went on record last year to say that mounting energy bills, higher wages and spiralling food prices all played their part. This story has been told before, but didn’t mend the achy hearts of the many Pret aficionados out there who made a trip to the café part of their daily routine .
