When asked to confirm reports that he was the counsel of Jose Juanito, and also about possible criticism for taking the job, Belmonte told Rappler: “I am, and my record can speak for itself. I choose my battles as just and worth fighting for.”was only publicized two days after he was nabbed for alleged possession of nearly a kilo of high-grade marijuana valued at P1.3 million. It also put a spotlight on the apparent double standard of law enforcers in handling drug suspects.
The public only learned that Belmonte was Juanito Jose’s lawyer weeks after the arrest. Back in October 18, when he spoke up about his son, Remulla said a “Belmonte confirmed to Rappler that he and Remulla are second cousins – the DOJ chief’s mother and Belmonte’s father are first cousins. But that’s not all – Belmonte said he is also a relative of Remulla’s wife.
