As Scottish children get ready for fright night, the long running tradition is rooted in Scottish history.

Halloween is finally here and while the holiday has been celebrated more in an American-style in recent years, one custom remains unique in Scotland.

While trick-or-treating is seen as an American phrase, the custom originated in Scotland and Ireland, the Scottish Daily Express reports. Instead, Scots say guising which is derived from the word "disguise" and the custom dates back to the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain meaning "summer's end".

It was believed these disguises would help them blend in with wandering spirits who visited the world of the living on All Hallows' Eve - the day the worlds of the living and dead were closest to one another. according to the National Trust for Scotland. It eventually spread into the US, becoming widespread in the 1930s. The term trick-or-treating eventually began being used and guising slowly faded from use in North America.
