Two shop owners in Wigan have been fined and ordered to pay significant sums after being convicted of selling vaping products to children under the age of 18. The cases, brought by Wigan Council's Trading Standards team, highlight the growing concern over underage vaping and its potential health risks.

Two shop owners in Wigan have faced legal consequences after being caught selling vaping products to underage children. The court cases, initiated by Wigan Council's trading standards team, highlight the serious health risks associated with vaping among young people. Farfan Latifi, owner of the Local Shop on Lord Street, Leigh, was fined £100 and ordered to pay a total of £620 after selling a vape to a 15-year-old during a trading standards investigation.

Habib Hakim, of Kaz Mini Market on Bryn Street, Ashton, received a £200 fine and a total payment of £760 for selling a similar product to a 16-year-old. Both shop owners pleaded guilty to the charges and were sentenced at Wigan and Leigh magistrates' court earlier this month. The prosecutions come after the NHS reported alarming cases of youngsters suffering from vaping-related health issues, including a collapsed lung and another teenager experiencing coughing up blood. Councilor Dane Anderton, cabinet portfolio holder for police, crime and civil contingencies, emphasized the council's commitment to tackling illegal vape sales to teenagers. He stated, 'Our teams are proactive in tackling shops who continue to break the law and sell vapes to teenagers from investigation to prosecution to conviction.' He further stressed, 'NHS advice is very clear - vaping is not for children and young people. With their lungs and brains still developing, they are more sensitive to the effects it can have.'This latest action follows a premises in Leigh being banned from selling vapes for 12 months last month due to underage sales. Councillor Anderton urged residents to report any concerns about shops selling vapes to teenagers to Trading Standards at [email protected] or by calling 0808 223 1133. He emphasized the importance of collective action in protecting young people from the dangers of vaping
