Wildfire warning after campfires and barbecues left during searing heatwave in Lancashire
The dangers of wildfires from campfires and barbecues have been hammered home after fires were started amid the heatwave across Lancashire.
However, the popular site was hit by a dangerous campfire on June 28, before this week's heatwave, says Cllr Hennessy, who came across a large pile of smouldering embers sitting on the peat in the woods. Despite her efforts to extinguish the smouldering pile, it kept reigniting, forcing her to call firefighters who came and dealt with it.
Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service said this week that while they were unable to confirm the latter incident, they had attended two incidents that had occurred across the county where people had been having barbecues or campfires. A spokesperson said: “We weren’t called to that specific incident in Ormskirk but we did attend a couple of incidents on Tuesday evening across the county where people had been having barbecues or campfires but fortunately these fires didn’t spread any further.
“My concern is the fact that somebody had deliberately left the house with the view in mind, I’m going to start a fire, they actually brought kindling and little pieces of wood to get it going, so that was my concern. I wanted to get the fire service involved to say look, bring a picnic, there’s no need to have hot food, bring your own picnic, there’s loads of places to sit - why light a fire? There’s no need.
“Our real plea is, please come, we do not want to stop you coming, we do want you to come, bring a picnic, don’t bring anything to cook on, don’t bring any naked flames, if you are going to smoke please make sure you put your cigarettes out responsibly, and also any rubbish. Glass bottles cause a real problem because they get magnified by the sunlight and the heat comes through them and it starts little localised fires.
