Some roads have been dropped from the Avenues scheme for now as work is due to finish on others.
Work to transform a number of streets as part of the £115 million Avenues programme will start in early 2025 while other streets are nearly finished.
The Avenues scheme involves making traffic lanes narrower, widening footpaths, adding street trees, cycle routes and rain gardens. The council said all efforts are under way to finish substantial parts of the work on the Sauchiehall Street Precinct in time for Christmas – with the project to complete in March after it was subject to delays.
Meanwhile construction on Argyle Street West is due to finish in October 2025. The Avenues transformation at Holland Street/Pitt Street is in the final stages and will be finished by January while work is expected to start in Spring next year on Stockwell Street.A major plan, which will see the George Square redesigned along with surrounding streets, will see a contractor hired in February and work beginning in April.
Other roads due to get makeovers beginning early 2025 are South Portland Street, Cowcaddens Road and Dobbies Loan.Councillors will be presented with an update on the Avenues scheme at the economy, housing, transport and regeneration city policy committee next week. There are plans to delay some of the city’s Avenues projects – with the construction industry being impacted by high inflation, Brexit, Covid and the war in Ukraine. Work has been re prioritised to focus on key Avenues.
Schemes at Hope Street, St Enoch’s Square, Cathedral Street and Bath Street and Glassford Street are among those set to be delayed. Sign up to our daily Glasgow Live newsletter here to receive news and features direct to your inbox
