Saturday’s loss to Sweden brought back painful memories from the Tokyo Olympics, in which the Matildas lost their bronze medal match to the United States.

For the second time in two years the Matildas were close but no cigar, and Sam Kerr says falling just short of World Cup bronze “feels like the worst position to come”.

“We’re really disappointed - to come fourth again kind of feels like the worst position to come,” said Kerr, who started her second match of the tournament. “I mean, it took me a while to get over the [Olympics] bronze medal match, losing to the USA, and the sadness comes from just feeling like you missed an opportunity,” she said.“I’m sure we’ll be able to smile about it tomorrow, because there’s been so much support and love for us girls ... but the bronze medal really would’ve been nice for us as individuals and as a team.

Caitlin Foord also came off worse for wear after a first-half head clash with Kosovare Asllani that left her with a black eye and required bandages around her head.
