Data reveals a decline in first-time youth offenders in Yorkshire, but experts raise concerns about the lack of support systems for these young people post-entry into the criminal justice system.

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has released data revealing the rates of juvenile delinquency in Yorkshire . In 2024, 826 young people aged 10 to 17 from Yorkshire and the Humber were new entrants to the criminal justice system. This signifies a slight decrease from 852 the previous year and a more notable reduction compared to 2,333 in 2014. Yorkshire and the Humber's rate of 152 young first-time offenders per 100,000 young people surpasses the England and Wales average of 138 per 100,000.

Nationwide, 8,110 young first-time offenders were recorded in 2024, representing a marginal decrease from 8,430 in the previous year and a significant 62% reduction from 21,252 in 2014.The data also highlights a concerning trend of rising convictions among juvenile first-time offenders. In 2024, 47% of young first-time offenders received a conviction, compared to 22% a decade ago. Experts, such as Jon Yates, CEO of the Youth Endowment Fund (YEF) and Ross Little, trustee for The National Association for Youth Justice, while acknowledging the positive trend of fewer juvenile offenders, emphasize the crucial need for support systems for these young people after their entry into the criminal justice system. They express concerns that the lack of adequate support, particularly in areas like mentoring and therapy, might perpetuate the cycle of delinquency. A spokesperson for the MoJ reassured that custody remains the last resort for children and primarily reserved for serious offenses. They emphasized the ongoing efforts of frontline staff to provide support and guide young people in custody
