Opposition education spokeswoman Sarah Henderson said the Albanese government’s migration fix would jeopardise Australia’s relationship with India.

The Coalition has accused the government of discriminating against Indian and other subcontinental students after universities moved to ban or limit certain nationalities to protect their own standing under the migration crackdown.

The Albanese government’s new migration strategy is designed to weed out people using the student visa system as a back door to the job market, aiming to cut new arrivals by about 250,000 a year by targeting universities and colleges considered the highest risk of accepting students coming to Australia to work rather than study.

Henderson said she didn’t blame education providers, “but I do say to the government, this is your mess. This is your chaos, and you need to fix it”.Comment has been sought from the office of Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil. On Monday, a spokesperson for the minister told this masthead the government was working with the sector to help providers navigate the changes.

Last November, Education Minister Jason Clare and Skills and Training Minister Brendan O’Connor visited India to strengthen the relationship between the countries as Australian universities set up overseas campuses.
