The dispute between the Golden Pass project and Zachry prompted thousands of layoffs last month. Now, Zachry aims “to hold the responsible parties accountable.”
More than two years before it filed for bankruptcy protection and laid off thousands of workers at Golden Pass , construction company Zachry Holdings Inc. said it warned Exxon Mobil executives that costs at the massive gas liquefaction plant it was building in East Texas were spiraling out of control. The San Antonio company was repeatedly reassured during more than 100 conversations that Exxon had its back, according to a motion filed Friday as part of Zachry’s bankruptcy proceedings.
Zachry agreed to build Golden Pass for a fixed $9.25 billion in 2019, but the project’s true cost ballooned 25% to $11.6 billion by August 2022, it said. The Golden Pass partners said in a filing last week that they had given Zachry additional funds, totaling roughly $1.7 billion, to complete the project despite the fixed-price contract. That filing asked the court to force Zachry out of its engineering and construction contract, with its fixed price.
