‘Russian tyranny has lost control over us’. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed US Congress in his surprise first trip since Russia’s invasion, saying next year would be a ‘turning point’ in the war.
Appearing before a joint session of Congress on Wednesday night, Zelensky received a standing ovation. He said ‘Ukraine is alive and kicking’ and that ‘Russian tyranny has lost control over us’.
He read from a speech on the podium and spoke entirely in English, vowing that his country ‘will win because we are united — Ukraine, America and the entire free world’. Zelensky said that many Ukrainians will spend Christmas by candlelight not because of the romantic aspect but because Russia’s air strikes on key infrastructure has forced them to ration electricity at two hours per day. Millions of Ukrainians are also without heat and water, he added.
Biden acknowledged that Russia is ‘purposely destroying critical infrastructure’ and vowed to continue supporting Ukraine. He announced that the US will send $1.8billion in additional aid including a Patriot missile defense system.
