Don’t Nod’s Aphelion blends walking simulation, romance, and survival horror in a compelling sci-fi adventure set on a newly discovered planet. Players navigate a treacherous landscape, unravel a mystery, and grapple with a complex relationship amidst humanity’s last hope.
Aphelion , the latest offering from the creators of Life Is Strange and Jusant, presents a unique blend of genres – a sci-fi adventure that leans heavily into walking simulation, romantic narrative, and a surprisingly tense, zero-combat survival horror experience.
While many games prioritize intricate mechanics like driving, shooting, or puzzle-solving, Aphelion distinguishes itself by focusing on a deeply resonant underlying message, a characteristic shared with titles like Despelote, Celeste, and Tides Of Tomorrow. However, Aphelion’s execution is notably more polished and impactful, particularly in its thematic exploration. The game is set in 2062, a future where Earth is succumbing to the devastating effects of global warming.
Humanity’s last hope rests on a precarious two-person mission to Persephone, a newly discovered planet orbiting the sun at the very edge of our solar system. This multi-billion-mile journey, framed as mankind’s final salvation, takes a dramatic turn after six years in space. During their prolonged isolation, the two astronauts, Officer Thomas Cross and Dr. Ariane Montclair, develop a romantic connection – a predictable, yet compelling, development.
Their ship crashes during the final approach to Persephone, leaving Thomas missing and Ariane awakening amidst the wreckage, suspended upside down. Her immediate task is survival, which serves as a natural introduction to the game’s core traversal mechanics. Gameplay revolves around exploration and movement, drawing inspiration from established titles like Tomb Raider and Uncharted. Players will spend a significant amount of time walking, running, squeezing through tight spaces, sliding down slopes, and scaling cliffs using a familiar jump-and-ledge system.
The environment also features fragile ice sheets that require careful navigation. While these mechanics are relatively standard, the game attempts to gamify the process of getting from point A to point B. Unfortunately, this is often hampered by the presence of invisible walls, a frustrating design choice.
However, the game compensates with exceptional facial animation and voice acting, even if Thomas’s English accent has a subtle French inflection, adding a touch of endearing charm to his interactions. The desolate, snowy landscapes of Persephone provide a beautiful, yet isolating, backdrop for the astronauts’ struggles. The planet’s surface is a stark contrast of icy plains, jagged black onyx peaks, and surprisingly abundant meltwater, revealing a world far different from the entirely icebound planet predicted by Earth-based scans.
The permafrost is visibly unstable, constantly cracking and collapsing into subterranean caverns. Ariane’s exploration leads her into these icy depths, where she encounters the Nemesis – a terrifying creature composed of electromagnetic radiation. This entity is completely blind but highly sensitive to sound, forcing Ariane to move with extreme caution. The game employs visual cues reminiscent of Silent Hill, with the screen distorting with digital interference as the Nemesis draws near.
The EM radiation also manifests as beautiful glyphs in the ice and fleeting, translucent apparitions of Thomas, offering reassurance but frustratingly preventing direct communication. This fuels Ariane’s determination to find him, compounded by her guilt over having previously resisted a deeper emotional connection for fear of jeopardizing the mission. The initial fear induced by the Nemesis diminishes over time, but the creature serves as a constant threat and a compelling reason to proceed cautiously.
Further complicating the narrative, Ariane discovers abandoned human settlements, creating a palpable survival horror atmosphere as she investigates their deserted interiors, attempting to unravel the mystery of their fate. There is no combat; instead, the focus remains on investigation and traversal, supplemented by a scanner that highlights objectives and detects pulsing strings of EM radiation. The scanner can also be used to clear snow from anchor points, creating grapple points for Ariane to swing from.
Thomas, hampered by a damaged oxygen tank, faces a different set of challenges, relying on Ariane to locate air sources for his umbilical, making the search for the next connection a critical priority. The game’s mysteries deepen as the players question how humans could have reached Persephone before them, and what ultimately happened to them
