McDonald's Launches Pineapple McSpicy Burger in the UK

McDonald's has introduced the Pineapple McSpicy burger to its UK menu as part of its 'World Menu Heist' promotion. This new burger, 'stolen from Australia,' features a fiery chicken patty with pineapple, bacon, cheese, and lettuce, prompting debate over the controversial fruit's place on savory food.

A new burger has landed in McDonald's restaurants this week and it is sure to raise the infamous question of whether pineapple belongs on savoury foods. Most of us will have heard of pineapple on pizza, with many of us having very strong opinions on whether it does, or doesn't, belong there.

But for me, the idea of having pineapple on a burger was a new concept altogether - and I was quite shocked to hear this would be one of the latest new items coming to McDonald's restaurants this week. It comes to stores as part of the new 'World Menu Heist', which has seen the fast food chain launch 17 McDonald's fan favourites from around the globe across its UK stores, including the Pineapple McSpicy, which it says is 'stolen from Australia'. But while this may be a familiar sight in Australia, I was quite surprised to hear a burger topped with pineapple would be coming to my local McDonalds restaurant and so I was eager to give it a try to see for myself whether pineapple does belong on a burger. Join the Manchester Evening News WhatsApp group HERE The Pineapple McSpicy includes a fiery chicken burger topped with a juicy slice of tropical pineapple. It also comes with bacon, cheese and lettuce and is served on a toasted sesame seed bun. As I opened up my Pineapple McSpicy I found my burger fillings to have become slightly lopsided within the bun, with the slice of pineapple clearly sticking out, meaning there was no chance of forgetting it was there. Looking at the burger from above, though, you could possibly trick yourself into thinking the pineapple was just a very thick slice of cheese . Though I have never seen a pineapple on a burger before, the idea of it didn't totally shock me, possibly due to the fact I am a big supporter of pineapple as a pizza topping. However, I started to become slightly uneasy about the idea of taking a bite once I opened up the burger. Lifting the top bun from the burger, I found that the pineapple was covered in thick mayonnaise and I couldn't quite imagine this sauce mixing well with the fruit. I had to somewhat rearrange my burger before taking a bite to ensure I got all of its fillings, including the pineapple. But after this I was quite impressed to find that the sweetness of the pineapple did blend well with the savoury fillings within the burger. The pineapple definitely worked, however it did keep striking me as slightly strange that this is what was within the burer. With the sandwich originating, according to Maccies, in Australia, I did wonder if the fruitiness of it may be more suited to the warmth of down under. Regardless, it did add an interesting sweetness to the spice of the McSpicy. However, for me, one of the main issues I couldn't get over was the amount of mayonnaise. While the condiment seems perfectly natural on a burger, I wasn't sure I was a fan of it paired with the juiciness of the pineapple. Because of the fruit, I also found that the Pineapple McSpicy to be possibly one of the messiest McDonald's burgers I have ever eaten, with many of the fillings leaking out from the bun. Luckily, I was eating the burger at home rather than out, and so the mess was pretty well contained - but I would definitely recommend having a stack of napkins at hand for this one. Though I did enjoy the burger, it may not be an item I choose to pick up again during a McDonald's visit - as I was left feeling quite unsure on the pairing of the fruit with the mayo. Instead, I can imagine the burger with less sauce, as the juiciness of the pineapple paired beautifully with the chicken on its own, in my opinion. But on the matter of whether a pineapple does belong on a burger, I would say that it can do. It may not be the most conventional burger topping but, for anyone looking to add a bit of sweetness to their normal McDonald's order, I would say the Pineapple McSpicy could be a great go to.
