Labour's Popularity Dips Amidst Brexit Concerns and Rise of Reform UK
Labour PartyBrexitYougov Poll

A recent poll reveals a significant decline in Labour's popularity, with a majority of its 2024 voters believing the country is on the wrong track. This comes amidst concerns about Brexit's impact and the potential rise of Reform UK, according to YouGov polls.

A survey of people who voted for Labour in 2024 showed that 56 per cent believe the country is not on the right track, on the eve of theWorryingly for Sir Keir Starmer, nearly three-quarters – 72 per cent – of voters polled shared the same opinion, according to a new YouGov poll for the pro-European think tank Best for Britain.

The survey of around 4,000 people earlier this month, shows just how far Labour’s popularity has fallen just 14 months after it swept to an historic victory. It comes as a major MRP poll, also by YouGov, this week showed that Nigel Farage’s Reform UK is almost on course to form a majority government under current predictions. Despite having just five MPs, the poll shows Reform is on track to have 311 seats at the next election, which would make it comfortably the largest party in a hung parliament, while Labour is on course to drop from 411 to 114. When Labour voters were asked why they believed things were getting worse for the UK, they overwhelmingly cited Brexit as the number one cause, with 69 per cent naming the decision to leave the European Union as the main reason behind the country’s problems. The polling also shows that nearly two-thirds of voters believe Brexit has been “a failure”, with 62 per cent of those surveyed stating their disappointment with the decision to leave Europe. Just 11 per cent believed it had been a success. Labour chair of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee Emily Thornberry, who was speaking in a personal capacity, said that once “voters saw that leaving the EU was costing them money and making it harder to fight international crime, they could see they’d been led up the garden path”. “Nevertheless, the public expect the government to make the best of the situation and take a pragmatic and constructive approach to relations with our European partners, one that tackles the cost of living and keeps us all safer,” she added. Her comments were echoed by Tom Brufatto, executive director of policy and research at Best for Britain, who said: “Tackling the painful legacy of Brexit, from the cost of living to energy prices, is vital if the government is to reinvigorate their base, take the fight to Reform UK, and turn the party’s fortunes around.” Perhaps more troubling for the Prime Minister, the number one reason for the failings of the country given by the wider public surveyed was the high rate of immigration, with nearly half – 48 per cent – opting for it, followed by 40 per cent claiming the Labour Government is to blame. Starmer’s government has struggled to get a grip on the small boats crisis, while efforts to cut legal net migration have yet to be felt by the public. The figures coincided with further public polling by YouGov published on Friday that showed more than half of Labour voters disapproved of the Government, with just 29 per cent of respondents feeling positive about Starmer’s administration. The pollster showed that Labour’s overall approval rating was now as low as the Conservatives’ just before the July 2024 general election. When it comes to all Brits surveyed, just 14 per cent approved of the Government’s performance, while 69 per cent disapproved. It gives Labour a net approval rating of -55, a near identical figure to the final -56 rating for the previous government last July, just before the Conservatives lost power. The total sample size for the Best for Britain survey was 4,368 adults. Fieldwork was undertaken between 5-10 September 2025.
