Discover Puffin Island in Anglesey, Wales, an idyllic, wildlife-rich sanctuary accessible by boat for less than a restaurant meal. This protected area offers stunning scenery and the chance to see puffins, black guillemots, seals, and more, with historical ties to local legends.
A tiny, deserted island where sunshine bathes the landscape and gentle waves kiss the shoreline - sounds perfect, doesn't it? Just over an hour's journey from Merseyside, you'll discover precisely that.
Better still, it's reachable by boat for less than what you'd spend on a restaurant meal. Puffin Island in Anglesey, Wales, is a safeguarded sanctuary thanks to the remarkable wildlife that visits throughout the seasons. Boasting breath-taking scenery, regular sailings from the mainland enable tourists to observe the birds that make their home there. During a visit to the delightful coastal town of Beaumaris on a glorious summer weekend, I was immediately advised that my experience wouldn't be complete without embarking on one of the numerous boat excursions available. We swiftly settled on an expedition to the island with Seacoast Safari. Priced at £19.95 for an 80-minute voyage, it appeared to be excellent value, especially as the current period between April and July represents the optimal time to encounter all the species that call the island home. After navigating through throngs of families crabbing along Beaumaris pier, we arrived at the jetty and prepared to embark on the compact vessel, joining 52 other enthusiastic adventurers. The island now serves as a sanctuary for birds and a Special Protection Area for wildlife, though it possesses a fascinating past - traces of some historic buildings remain visible. It's believed to have offered shelter to King Cadwallon ap Cadfan of Gwynedd following the invasion of the Kingdom of Northumbria. The voyage provided a perfect chance to observe wildlife in their native habitat. We were fortunate to encounter black guillemots, razorbills, cormorants, grey seals, and of course, puffins. Our excursion was enhanced by captivating and informative commentary, with our guide, Steve, pointing out notable sights while sharing fascinating local history. All Puffin Island excursions set off from Beaumaris and are subject to tidal and weather conditions, so it's advisable to check in advance. However, this wasn't the sole attraction in the charming town. The area was bustling with food stalls, serving up some of the crispest fried fish and golden chips I've encountered. I secured a generous portion for just under £5 and savoured every mouthful. Had I possessed a few additional hours, I would've certainly explored the historic Beaumaris Castle too. The landmark is frequently described as the 'greatest' and that's reason enough for me to add the town back onto my must-visit list.
