FIFA is set to announce two new red card offenses ahead of the World Cup, including covering the mouth during confrontations and leaving the pitch in protest. The rules, inspired by incidents like Vinicius Jr's case and the AFCON final, will apply to international competitions but not domestic leagues next season. Concerns have been raised about players protesting racist abuse.
Two new red card rules are set to be announced by FIFA ahead of this summer's World Cup . Scotland kick off their campaign against Haiti in Boston on Sunday June 14 and there will be a couple of new sending off offences to be aware of.
The world governing body is set to make covering your mouth when confronting an opponent a straight red, as will leaving the pitch in protest at a ref's decision. The Times report that FIFA president Gianni Infantino is set to announce the new rulings at their congress in Vancouver today.
However, the rules won't be in place for domestic and continental competitions next season, as they are yet to be passed by IFAB. Competition organisers are understood to have concerns over what the new rules would mean for players who are victims of racist abuse and walk off the pitch.
Making mouth covering a red card is thought to have been inspired by an incident last February involving Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr, who will likely lined up against Steve Clarke's men in the final Group C game between the Scots and Brazil in Miami. He accused Benfica's Gianluca Prestianni of racially abusing him during a Champions League clash while the Argentine had his shirt over his mouth to avoid anyone being able to lip read what he was saying.
He was later banned for six games by UEFA after admitting making homophobic comments, but denied racism. Infantino is adamant the second rule change relating to players leaving the pitch in protest is necessary after the drama of this years AFCON Final. Senegal walked off for several minutes after hosts Morocco were awarded a penalty.
They returned, only for Brahim Diaz to miss the spot kick and Senegal went on to win, before being stripped of the title in March - a decision Senegal are currrntly challenging in the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
