Dylan Carey was sentenced to 18 months but released early following his involvement in violent disorder outside Southport Mosque during a protest fueled by misinformation.

A man who was expecting a child was released from prison after serving just three months of an 18-month sentence for violent disorder in Southport . Dylan Carey, 26, attended Liverpool Magistrates' Court on August 6 where he admitted to the charge stemming from an incident on July 30.

Earlier that day, Carey and his pregnant girlfriend participated in a vigil in Southport town centre to honor the memory of six-year-old Bebe King, seven-year-old Elsie Dot Stancombe, and nine-year-old Alice da Silva Aguiar, who tragically died in a mass stabbing at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class the previous day. Following the attack, which also injured eight children and two adults, misinformation spread online, leading to the announcement of a protest outside Southport Mosque after the vigil. The situation escalated rapidly into violence. Prosecutor Joshua Sanderson-Kirk described the scene for the court, stating that police arrived outside the mosque on July 30 to find a hostile crowd of approximately 200 people. Items were thrown towards the mosque, and the crowd chanted offensive slogans, expressing anger and questioning the police's actions. Mobile phone footage presented to the court showed Carey, wearing a grey t-shirt, throwing an object and kicking a police van as it drove away. Body-worn camera footage from a police officer captured him kicking out at a stationary police van. During his interview with detectives after his arrest, Carey stated that he had attended the vigil because his girlfriend had wanted to lay flowers and light a candle. Carey, from Hindley, was initially remanded into custody before being sentenced on August 12 to 18 months in prison. He was informed that he would miss the birth of his child. However, after serving just three months, he was released from prison. A spokesperson for the Ministry of Justice commented, 'Anyone released into Home Detention Curfew faces strict licence conditions and must be tagged. Those who break the rules face being returned to custody.
