The partnership links two organisations already central to platinium and palladium markets
The Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance and the London Platinum and Palladium Market have joined forces to push higher standards for responsible sourcing in the platinum group metals sector.
Announced on Monday, the partnership aims to help mining companies improve environmental and social practices and bring more transparency to the global trade in platinum and palladium. It links two organisations already central to how these metals are produced, traded and verified - IRMA through its mining assurance standards, and LPPM through its market oversight.Leaders say John Cullen, chair of the LPPM, said the group was "delighted to have the opportunity to work with the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance, through the LPPM's Responsible Sourcing Committee."He added, "We look forward to the collaboration yielding benefits for all our members and the entire PGM industry."Aimee Boulanger, executive director of IRMA, said the partnership shows IRMA's "collaborative approach to improving mining practices.""Learning from each other will help us achieve our vision to increase value for the efforts of mining companies who respect the human rights of affected communities, provide healthy and supportive workplaces, minimise environmental harm, and leave positive legacies," she added.Under the agreement, the two organisations plan to keep up a regular dialogue on best practices, support members seeking to improve their operations, and share knowledge on audit and performance measures.IRMA moves The effort comes as governments, investors and communities demand stronger proof that metals are sourced responsibly. The timing also aligns with IRMA's own updates to its global mining standard. The second public consultation period for the draft IRMA Standard v2.0 closed on 22 October, following 90 days of feedback from industry, civil society and community representatives.Meanwhile, IRMA-approved auditor ERM CVS is preparing for an on-site surveillance audit at Valterra Platinum's Mototolo mine in South Africa's Limpopo province from 24 to 26 November. The mine previously achieved an IRMA 75 rating, one of the higher performance levels, in a 2024 audit. The upcoming review will check whether the site continues to meet IRMA standards and is progressing on its corrective action plan.Auditors will also interview workers and local residents as part of the process.
