Our deputy political editor Sam Coates has given his reaction to Sophy's revealing interview with Sir Keir Starmer . While talking about his family, notably his ' emotionally distant father ', Sam says we 'saw something you don't often see with Keir Starmer'. 'We knew the story (about his relationship with his father) because it's just come out in a biography,' says Sam.
'But to hear him tell that story on camera… I saw him swallow twice… the way he uses his words - he put it in the third person and depersonalises it…' He knew as a politician he had to perform and convince people. But also, it clearly hurts. On Labour's spending plans, though, Sam suggests the Labour leader seemed less sincere. Given the rough economic situation a Labour government would inherit, and existing Tory spending commitments - including tax cuts and compensation schemes, like for the Post Office scandal - there are questions over what the party would do if there's no money left.
