A mother from Stockport, England, Rachel Vickers, has escaped a prison sentence despite defrauding her former employer, Practical Publishing Ltd, of over £10,000. The judge, Recorder Mr Ainsworth, suspended her sentence due to the impact on her young child.

A 33-year-old mother from Stockport, Rachel Vickers, has narrowly avoided a prison sentence after defrauding her former employer, Practical Publishing Ltd, of over £10,000. Vickers exploited her position of trust within the company by dispatching 153 'circuit machines' to a fabricated customer. The equipment was subsequently sold, with Vickers pocketing the proceeds.

The fraud was uncovered during an internal audit conducted by Practical Publishing, which revealed irregularities in the company's order books. The investigation disclosed that replacement orders were being sent to a non-existent customer. Authorities determined that equipment valued at £10,385 had gone missing, although Vickers personally gained approximately £6,000 from the scheme. Prosecutor Emily Calman presented the case at Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court on Monday. Vickers' defense attorney, Verity Quaite, argued that her client's financial gain was reduced to £6,100 because her final wage was withheld by her employer. She emphasized that Vickers, a mother to a seven-month-old baby, was unable to afford a fine. Judge Recorder Mr Ainsworth acknowledged Vickers' previous conviction for fraud in 2015, when she failed to inform Trafford Council about her father's death. However, he took into account her young child and the potential impact of imprisonment on her family. As a result, Vickers was sentenced to eight months in prison, suspended for 18 months. She was also required to participate in 25 days of rehabilitation activities.
