Welcome back to The i Paper's politics live blog on Monday, 27 April. Sir Keir Starmer is facing another bruising week as the fallout over the vetting for Lord Peter Mandelson ’s appointment as ambassador to Washington continues.
The Prime Minister will seek to shift the focus when he gives a speech on efforts to crack down on shoplifting on Monday. But he is facing mounting pressure over the revelations about the peer’s vetting process and Starmer’s handling of it, including his decision to sack Foreign Office chief Sir Olly Robbins. On Tuesday the Foreign Affairs Committee is due to hear from Starmer’s former chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, widely regarded as a protege of Lord Mandelson.

Also today, the UK's ambassador to thee US has confirmed that the King’s state visit has “all appropriate security measures” in place following what the White House has called an attempted assassination of President Donald Trump.
Sir Christopher Turner said UK and US security teams had been planning the trip for weeks before the incident at the media dinner, with changes possible “as we go”. Buckingham Palace confirmed the visit would “proceed as planned” after discussions were held on both sides of the Atlantic and advice taken from the Government. We'll have updates throughout the day.
