Darron Gibson, who played for Manchester United and the Republic of Ireland, has revealed he nearly died three years ago due to a sleeping pill addiction. The former midfielder suffered a seizure while watching a match between Manchester United and Manchester City, leading his wife to believe he had passed away.
Former Manchester United midfielder, Darron Gibson , has revealed he nearly died after suffering a seizure due to an addiction to sleeping pills. Gibson, who made 60 appearances for United during his seven-year stint at the club and helped them clinch the Premier League title in 2010/11, also won 27 caps for the Republic of Ireland.
His eyes rolled back into his head, his lips turned blue, and he sweated profusely, leading his wife Danielle to believe he had passed away. Fortunately, Gibson survived and was rushed to Wythenshawe Hospital in south Manchester for assessment. Gibson's struggle with sleeping pills began after a severe knee injury in 2013, which followed his move from United to Everton. He developed insomnia and turned to the tablets for relief, but his situation deteriorated as he began to rely on alcohol too.
