Instagram introduces new safety measures to limit teens' exposure to violent content, following a campaign addressing online violence. Simultaneously, a court rules that PPE Medpro, owned by Michelle Mone's husband, supplied defective PPE to the UK government, ordering a significant refund to taxpayers.
It’s about time that billionaire Mark Zuckerberg got his house in order. The vas t social media companies he controls – such as Facebook and Instagram – have spent years shrugging their shoulders whenever complaints were raised about the countless sickening videos uploaded to their platforms.
All the while raking in billions in profits. So credit where it’s due as Instagram has finally implemented new safety measures which should limit the ability of teens to view violent videos. It’s worth bearing in mind that those under 13 shouldn’t be using social media in the first place. Far too often, videos of playground fights or other horrifying violence involving teenagers is widely shared online. The Instagram update follows the Daily Record’s long-running Our Kids ... Our Future campaign which was launched after a spate of violent attacks on young people in Scotland were filmed and uploaded to internet platforms. Parents of victims are right to question what effect the move by Instagram can really have if other platforms don’t enforce the same measures. Snapchat and TikTok must follow suit. Social media giants have gotten away with excuses for too long. They argue they can’t be held responsible for what individuals upload. But that just doesn’t wash any longer. Companies like Instagram owe everyone a duty of care. Other social media firms must follow suit. It took five years before the now notorious contract for PPE Medpro to supply medical gowns to the UK Government was finally declared a dud by a court. A judge ruled that the firm, owned by Michelle Mone’ s husband Doug Barrowman, supplied defective personal protective equipment for use in the NHS during the pandemic. The court ordered PPE Medpro to return £122million – plus £23million in interest – to the taxpayer by 4pm yesterday. Hard-pressed taxpayers are right to be thinking this is clear-cut case. Mone and her husband oversaw a defective deal and should now cough-up a refund. Labour ministers and the courts cannot allow the situation to end with no money being recovered. While due process must be followed, what kind of message does it send if so much money is written off? The public is waiting for its £145million.
