Tortilla , the fast-casual Mexican restaurant chain, has significantly enhanced its environmental sustainability efforts by eliminating substantial plastic waste from its supply chain. This positive change is a direct result of a new partnership with Prowrap , a UK-based wrap manufacturer. Tortilla has implemented the Speedwrap Pro 300 dispenser across all 74 of its UK restaurants.
This strategic move is designed to curb carbon emissions and actively combat the escalating global plastic pollution crisis. The initiative is anticipated to eliminate over 1,200kg of carbon dioxide emissions annually, encompassing notable reductions in emissions associated with manufacturing, transportation, and materials procurement. The sustainability improvements stem from the removal of thousands of small plastic adapters previously used with Tortilla's food wrap refills. These unseen components, although seemingly insignificant individually, contributed to a considerable environmental impact. The Speedwrap Pro system utilizes plastic-free refill rolls, rendering the plastic adapters obsolete. Consequently, Tortilla will prevent the generation of 178kg of plastic waste and 591kg of CO₂ annually. Furthermore, the dispensers' UK-based manufacturing reduces transport emissions, resulting in an additional annual saving of 733kg of CO₂, an amount comparable to the energy required to charge 1.5 million smartphones.\Emily Bagshaw, Central Operations Director at Tortilla, emphasized the company's commitment to sustainability. She stated that providing fresh, customizable meals without environmental concerns is central to Tortilla's core mission. Bagshaw expressed enthusiasm for the Speedwrap Pro, highlighting its exceptional performance and efficiency in the restaurants. She also emphasized its contribution to reducing supply chain emissions. Tortilla revealed that its previous wrapping system necessitated the use of 27,450 plastic adapters each year. If these adapters were stacked, they would reach a height of 823 meters, nearly matching the height of the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building. The scale of this waste underscores the significance of the change. This provides a tangible illustration of the impact of seemingly small components on a company's overall environmental footprint.\Ben Creeth, Sustainability Analyst at Prowrap, pointed out the broader implications of the problem within the foodservice industry. He noted that these small plastic adapters, though seemingly insignificant, collectively contribute to a substantial amount of waste, each associated with hidden environmental costs. Creeth expressed Prowrap's pride in leading the way by shedding light on these hidden costs and actively assisting their customers in taking tangible action to reduce waste and lower costs through the Speedwrap Pro. He further emphasized the scale of impact, stating that Tortilla had successfully eliminated a Burj Khalifa-sized stack of plastic waste from its supply chain. He challenged the foodservice industry to consider the potential for eliminating unnecessary plastic waste if other chains adopted the Speedwrap Pro system.
