Nick and Julia Nairn, renowned celebrity chef couple, are forced to shut down their restaurant due to a legal battle with their former landlord over unpaid rent. The Stirling Sheriff Court granted a winding-up order against their company, N&N Realisations, after the former landlord, Wood, sought outstanding payments owed under a 10-year management agreement. The Nairns claim the contract became unviable due to changing market conditions, particularly the cost-of-living crisis, while Wood maintains that they consistently breached payment terms.
A renowned celebrity TV chef has been compelled to shutter his beloved restaurant following a contentious dispute with the landlord over outstanding financial obligations. Stirling Sheriff Court granted a winding-up order against N&N Realisations , the company managing the restaurant, at the behest of the former landlord and owner of WoodWinters, a local mine merchant.
This legal action stemmed from Wood's efforts to recover unpaid rent, which accumulated under a 10-year management agreement signed with the Nairns in 2019. While the Nairns initially agreed to a payment structure involving a percentage of their quarterly turnover, they contend that the contract became unsustainable due to a shift in market conditions.Julia Nairn, in an interview with The Herald, highlighted the transformative impact of the global economic climate on the restaurant's viability. She stated that the cost-of-living crisis coincided with the reopening, leading to an ill-fated small plates menu strategy. She explained, 'The world has changed' by the time we reopened, noting the cost-of-living crisis. We had very little to fall back on. The cost of living crisis had kicked in we opened with the wrong offer. We did a small plates offer in Bridge of Allan turned out nobody wants small plates on a Wednesday afternoon in Bridge of Allan.' Nick Nairn echoed his wife's sentiments, describing their repeated attempts to renegotiate the management agreement with Wood as futile. He asserted that 'repeated requests, either directly or through the landlord, to sit down and renegotiate this management agreement' were consistently rejected by Wood. However, Wood refutes these claims, maintaining that the Nairns 'consistently' breached the agreed payment terms. Official records reveal that N&N Realisations, solely managed by Julia Nairn, was liquidated. The government website's company page confirms this. Furthermore, financial documents indicate a substantial debt owed to creditors exceeding £300,000, as reported by The Herald. Julia Nairn attempted to clarify the situation, suggesting that the creditor reports represented a 'snapshot taken in August' and that suppliers had been paid promptly. In addressing the inter-company debt, Mrs Nairn stated, 'That was the number that was taken at the time. We have worked with the accountant and the administrator. That number has been reduced some and there is a plan to pay back what is owed. There will be money going into that pot from us personally.' The restaurant, despite its closure, garnered considerable acclaim from previous patrons, who consistently lauded its culinary offerings and exceptional service on platforms like Tripadvisor
