New research highlights the presence of microplastics in tea bags, contrasting with the health benefits of tea consumption. Studies show that drinking up to two cups of tea daily can lower the risk of heart problems, but also point out potential risks associated with plastic tea bags, offering tips on how to enjoy tea while minimizing exposure to microplastics.

Research on microplastics in tea bags have left us wondering how good a daily cup of tea is for our health.

According to a 2024 study, adults who drink up to two cups of tea a day for more than seven years have a 19 per cent lower risk of dying from a heart attack or stroke than those who drink less, or no tea at all.

But a study by scientists at the University of Birmingham that examined more than 150 drinks found that hot tea contained the highest levels of microplastics. Choose paper tea bags or those made from natural plant fibres rather than those made from nylon or polyethene.

How to avoid microplatics in your cuppa Brew tea in non-plastic mugs or cups, as repeated exposure to heat can increase plastic leaching over time. Up to two cups of unsweetened tea a day reduces the risk of heart problems and stroke by up to 21 per cent.

Black tea should ideally be brewed for three to five minutes. Shorter brewing times result in fewer antioxidants.

How best to prepare tea Research has found that consuming black tea increases blood levels of antioxidants, and adding milk does not seem to inhibit this effect.
