Carl-Eduard, Prince of Bismarck, is embroiled in a legal battle with his siblings over a substantial inheritance, sparking renewed attention to the family's long-standing internal conflicts and a legacy marred by scandal.
A decades-long feud within the historic Bismarck family has escalated into a legal battle over a multi-million euro inheritance. Carl-Eduard, Prince of Bismarck, a great-great-grandson of the renowned 'Iron Chancellor' Otto von Bismarck, is suing his younger brother Gregor and sister Vanessa for a share of their inheritance, estimated to be worth up to €1billion (£840million).
Carl-Eduard, nicknamed 'Calle', was disinherited by his father, Ferdinand von Bismarck, in 2002 due to his notorious party lifestyle. He has been criticized for his drunken antics and labeled 'Germany's laziest MP' for his poor attendance record during his time in the country's federal parliament. The prince's fourth wife has characterized the family dynamic as a 'dysfunctional environment' marked by 'greed and jealousy'.A particularly shocking incident in 2010 at their baroque estate near Hamburg saw police handcuffing Carl-Eduard after he attempted to evict his mother from his quarters. He claimed his mother, Princess Elisabeth, was an alcoholic and antisemite who insulted his third wife, Nathalie Bariman, a Jewish woman. Carl-Eduard has admitted to past arrests for drunk driving and unpaid debts. The siblings recently faced each other in court in Lübeck, where they reportedly avoided eye contact and left their lawyers to handle negotiations. Judge Stephen Schlöpke requested further documentation to determine the full extent of the family's wealth.Gregor, the youngest son, alleges that Carl-Eduard received a loan from their father before his death in 2019, which could result in a smaller inheritance for the playboy prince. While the judge suggested an out-of-court settlement, observers believe it's unlikely given the family's history of dysfunction. This legal dispute is not an isolated incident within the Bismarck family. Carl-Eduard's younger brother, Count Gottfried von Bismarck, tragically died from a cocaine and heroin overdose in his London penthouse. Gottfried was also linked to several fatal accidents in the UK, including the death of Olivia Channon, daughter of former Trade and Industry Secretary Paul Channon, in 1986. Even Otto von Bismarck, the man who cemented the family's legacy, has faced scrutiny in recent years. In 2022, the German foreign ministry removed his name from a hall and portrait from its building due to his connections with German colonialism
