Meghan Markle's 2018 wedding to Prince Harry was filled with fairytale moments, but it also saw a series of controversies that hinted at future tensions within the Royal Family. From a veil snagging incident to a choice of car with a controversial past and a dispute over the Duchess's desired tiara, these early missteps foreshadowed the challenges that lay ahead.
Millions of royal fans around the world watched as American bride Meghan Markle walked down the aisle to marry Prince Harry in their fairytale wedding in 2018. Amidst the spectacle, many details caught the eye, including the Duchess of Sussex's minimalist silk wedding gown, which cost a reported £200,000 from Givenchy, and its 16-foot-long veil.
However, the veil quickly became a point of contention when it snagged as Meghan stepped out of the Rolls-Royce that transported her to St George's Chapel on that beautiful day, May 19. Her heel had become entangled, and while she needed a moment to free it, the escorting officer who opened the door offered no assistance. Royal author Tom Bower claims he was informed by another officer that the unhelpful behavior stemmed from an incident during the wedding rehearsal the previous day, and that 'no one had any feeling of goodwill towards the bride'. Bower suggests this officer's actions foreshadowed the future challenges in Meghan's relationship with the Royal Family. Eventually, Meghan managed to untangle the veil herself and exited the car, but she refused to take the arm of a different escorting officer. Beyond the veil episode, Meghan's choice of transportation also raised eyebrows among royal observers. The maroon-colored Phantom IV, which carried Meghan and her mother Doria Ragland from the Cliveden House Hotel to the chapel, possessed a rather unique history. It had previously transported another American divorcee, the Duchess of Windsor, to the funeral of her husband, the Duke, in 1972. The connection to the Duchess of Windsor, a figure central to the abdication crisis, proved to be a controversial choice. Her status as a figure of controversy until her death in 1986 likely made her an unwelcome comparison. The Daily Mail's Sebastian Shakespeare questioned at the time if the choice was a regrettable joke in poor taste.Only 18 Phantom IVs were built by Rolls-Royce between 1950 and 1956, with others finding their way into museums and public collections. It had been commissioned and delivered to the Queen in 1950, when she was still Princess Elizabeth. Meghan's wedding was also marred by other controversies. Reports emerged of a dispute between Harry and one of the Queen's closest aides over the tiara Meghan desired to wear. Leading up to the wedding, the Queen had graciously offered Meghan access to her collection of tiaras during what Harry later described as an 'extraordinary morning'. She allowed Meghan to try them on in her private dressing room, in the presence of herself, her devoted dresser and friend Angela Kelly, and a royal jewelry expert. However, Meghan wanted to try the tiaras on with her hairdresser present, as they are complex to wear and require a fitting beforehand, according to royal expert Richard Eden. He suggests something went awry, as scheduling a fitting with Kelly proved difficult, and the tone of communication between Meghan and the Palace seemed to irritate Kelly. Eden speculates that Meghan, accustomed to directing staff on television sets, may not have been accustomed to dealing with someone like Kelly, a trusted confidante of the Queen. This incident, he believes, may have been a turning point in the relationship between Meghan and the Queen
