Winter Houseplants: A Guide to Festive Blooms

Discover how to care for winter-blooming houseplants like Christmas cacti, cyclamen, and amaryllis to bring seasonal charm to your home and make excellent Christmas gifts. Learn tips from the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) to maximize their potential during the colder months.

During long, dark evenings, vibrant houseplants in your home can add a touch of seasonal charm. While indoor varieties, such as snake plants and cheese plants, offer appeal throughout the year, flora that blooms during the winter months make excellent Christmas presents.

To maintain your cherished winter-interest houseplants in peak form during the chillier period, they'll require occasional watering and minimal to no feeding. Several techniques endorsed by the Royal Horticultural Society will assist you in maximising your plants' potential. The specialists noted: "Christmas cacti are unusual and attractive houseplants. Unlike most cacti, they come from forests, and they aren't spiny, either. "Their flattened stems have an architectural quality all year round, but their star quality is their abundant, brightly coloured flowers borne over the cooler months." Keep this houseplant positioned away from heating sources and draughts, whilst avoiding excessive watering, reports the Express.Another classic favourite, indoor cyclamen, arrives in an extensive array of shades, including white and red. The specialists explained: "Some even have attractively fringed petals too. Always water them from the base and be careful not to overwater, as they can be prone to root rot. "You can keep them going from year to year, just make sure you give them a dry resting period over the summer before re-starting watering in early autumn."Amaryllis plants are among the most "dramatic" flowering plants that can be grown indoors. With their large, striking blooms in shades of pink, red, green or white, they're a favourite Christmas gift. The experts noted: "Bear in mind that they're bulbs, so will naturally die back over the summer and begin re-growing again in autumn." They advised: "Feed with high-potash liquid feed such as tomato food when in growth to encourage abundant flowering."Jasmine is another beloved plant for many gardeners, with its delightful scent and delicate pink buds that open to white, star-shaped flowers. The experts explained: "It's a climbing plant, with several hardy relatives that are often grown indoors in gardens." They suggested: "If you live in a mild area and have a warm, south-facing wall, try planting it in your garden after it has finished flowering."
