Barclays Bank has released a statement addressing the minimum age requirements for its various current accounts, following customer inquiries and the increasing utilization of banking services by individuals of all ages in the UK.

Barclays Bank has issued a statement clarifying the minimum age requirements for holders of its different current account types, amidst customer queries and the widespread use of banking services by people of all ages across the UK.

The issue surfaced when one Barclays customer reached out to the bank on Twitter asking, 'Hi @BarclaysUKHelp, my son recently changed his phone and it's unable to let him login? ' Accompanying the query was a screenshot displaying a message from Barclays during login stating, 'You need to be aged 16 or over, or aged 11-15 and a BarclayPlus account holder, to register your app.' In response, Barclays inquired: 'Hi there, thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry to hear your son has lost access to the App, has he previously been able to log into this via his old phone? Can I just confirm what kind of account your son has and how old he is?' On its website, Barclays makes it clear that customers must be at least 16 years old to hold a Young Person's Account and manage their finances online or through the app, reports the Express. It explains, 'To manage your finances online, you have to be 16 or over and hold a Young Person's Account, a Barclays Bank Account or other qualifying current account.' The bank advises, 'If you've recently turned 16 and have a BarclayPlus Account, you'll need to visit your local branch so we can upgrade your account to a Young Person's Account and register you for Online Banking. If you have the right account, you can register online today.' Barclays has a tailored offering for the younger savers with its BarclayPlus account, suitable for those over 11 years old. Barclays explains: 'It's ideal for birthday or Christmas money, and you only need £1 to open an account.' The bank highlights the convenience of managing funds on-the-go with their app, noting: 'Check your money when you're out and about with our app. Shop in store or online if you have a contactless debit card. Use Apple Pay to buy things'
