A deadly midair collision between an American Airlines jet and an Army helicopter near Washington, D.C. , has reignited the spotlight on the federal agency responsible for investigating aviation disasters. The crash, which tragically claimed 67 lives, has prompted a comprehensive investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board ( NTSB ).
NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy emphasized the agency's commitment to uncovering every detail during a press conference held with board members and a lead investigator. She assured the public that the NTSB would leave no stone unturned in this meticulous investigation. The NTSB, an independent federal agency, conducts investigations into all civil aviation accidents and serious incidents involving other transportation modes in the U.S., including railroad disasters, major motor vehicle, marine vessel, pipeline, and even commercial space operator accidents. The agency functions with five board members who serve five-year terms, nominated by the president and confirmed by the U.S. Senate. To unravel the complexities of this tragedy, the NTSB will establish several dedicated working groups, each focusing on specific aspects of the accident. These groups include operations, structures, power plants, systems, air traffic control, survival factors, and a helicopter-focused group. Additionally, a human-performance group will be integrated into the operations, air traffic control, and helicopter groups, analyzing crew performance and any contributing factors such as human error, fatigue, medications, medical histories, training, and workload. The NTSB has recovered the cockpit voice recorder and flight data recorder from the involved Bombardier CRJ700 aircraft, which are currently undergoing evaluation at the agency's laboratories. While the investigation is in its nascent stages, NTSB officials have not disclosed the estimated duration. Accident investigations often span one to two years. The agency typically releases a preliminary report within a few weeks, summarizing initial findings collected at the scene. The NTSB's history dates back to 1926 when Congress mandated the U.S. Department of Commerce to investigate aircraft accidents. It transitioned into an independent agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation in 1967 and was subsequently separated by Congress in 1974 as a standalone entity, entirely independent of other federal agencies. Since its establishment in 1967, the NTSB reports investigating over 153,000 aviation accidents and incidents
