Export permit expected in near future

Kodal Minerals has dismissed mainstream media reports that suggest its spodumene exports have been blocked from its Bougouni lithium project in Mali. The company pointed to reports by news agency Reuters, which quoted chief executive Bernard Aylward as saying that regulatory hurdles have left Kodal unable to export its product, as it finalises its export permit with the government.

Aylward is currently in Mali and visiting the operations to review the progress of the mining, processing and exploration drilling."Discussions with the government of Mali on finalising the export permit for spodumene concentrate produced at Bougouni are continuing as planned, and it is expected the permit will be received in the near future.""A further announcement will be made once it is received," the company said on Monday."The government of Mali has been very supportive of the development of Bougouni, and this support continues in the ongoing export permit discussions, and it is acknowledged that it is in the interests of the parties to commence exports of spodumene concentrates as soon as possible," it added. The company has over 27,000t of spodumene concentrate ready for export, gathered from its first production in February. It has one offtake partner, China's Hainan Mining, and it is looking to expand its untapped Boumou resource, which, if successful, will see the company expand the life-of-mine from four years to around 15 years.Kodal has 350sq.km under license, and the company intends to continue to explore its options.Mining CodeIn 2023, Mali's military government announced a new mining code, laying the groundwork for greater state ownership of mines. As a result, leases have been renegotiated with several Western miners, including Barrick, B2Gold and Resolute. Both Barrick and Resolute have had run-ins with the Malian government. However, work has now completely stopped at Barrick's operation.Kodal's deal, meanwhile, saw it transfer 35% of Bougouni to a new entity, Les Mines de Lithium de Bougouni, which is 35% owned by the government of Mali. The remainder will be held by Kodal and its JV partner, the Chinese group Hainan, on a 49-51% split."The company has and continues to enjoy a positive relationship with the government of Mali, having had a presence in the country for over a decade," it said on Monday. "Kodal also wishes to confirm that operations continue as normal, with the ramp-up to nameplate production of the processing plant remaining firmly on track."
