565 illegal miners arrested in South Africa after police cut supplies

An unprecedented scene unfolded over the weekend in South Africa's North West Province, where a dramatic police-led operation left hundreds of illegal miners with little choice but to emerge from the suffocating depths of an abandoned mine. The miners, known locally as zama zamas - or "those who try their luck" - were forced to exit a gold shaft after the South African Police Service , supported by the South African National Defence Force , cut off food and water supplies.

"We are not backing down until all those illegal miners resurface and are arrested," Sibiya declared. "Since its inception, more than 13,691 suspects have been arrested in the seven provinces that are hotspots for illegal mining. We have seized R5 million in cash and uncut diamonds worth R32 million .

and SANDF's operation has been met with mixed reactions. Some human rights advocates caution that measures such as blocking food supplies border on being inhumane. Yet, for others, harsh action is necessary to curb illegal activities that pose threats to both the miners themselves and the broader community. On both ends of the spectrum, the operation underscores a significant yet often overlooked reality: the roots of this informal industry lie deeper than the pursuit of profit.
